I know "Cheers" is a big tourist attraction in Boston. Are there any other on-location sites for movie buffs?

Woody's L Street Tavern

Bar-hoppers take note: “Cheers” is not the only game in town. If you are wandering through South Boston and are feeling a little parched, stop in at Woody's L Street Tavern. You may find yourself rubbing elbows with the likes of Southie favorites Ben Affleck or Matt Damon. This is the tavern featured in the movie “Good Will Hunting” which shot the two then-unknown actors into superstardom. The bar has enjoyed its brush with fame but it is mostly frequented by locals. The beer is good, very reasonably priced and the atmosphere is strictly neighborhood – no Hollywood glitz here. Although Affleck, escorting then-fiance Jennifer Lopez, did roll up in a silver Bentley one day to chat with the staff and patrons. The tavern is at 658A E 8th Street in South Boston. Telephone: 617-268-4335.

We visited the tavern on a Saturday night. We weren't really up for hanging in a trendy bar but wanted to hang out in South Boston for the night. We walked into the bar, the music wasn't too loud, there was a little bit of a crowd but plenty of room to move around. We got two seats at the bar and we were greeted by a very friendly bartender, Kevin. (His name only stuck in my head cause its my brothers name.) Who we thought was absolutely hysterical. People were having fun, watching the red sox and playing keno. We were only planning on staying for a few beers but the atmosphere and the great conversation with the bartender made us feel like we were from Southie. We stayed till closing! One of the best parts of the night which I found pretty amazing was the bartender Kevin let us stay till everyone left while we waited for a cab. It never showed up! Several blocks up the street cabs tend to sit. Not really knowing the area he walked us up to the block where they sit. Im 40 years old and Ive been to many bars in my life, and never have I been so well treated by such a nice young man. Me and my wife had a great time at this bar, and we are definitely going back there when we are in the neighborhood again. Two thumbs up!
