Of course, one of the most famous groups to come out of Boston is the group Boston. Just about every song on their first album (named, of course, "Boston") was a hit.

The Boston Pops are perhaps most famous for performing every Fourth of July during the fireworks, but they put on many other performances that are quite enjoyable.

Why is Boston called Beantown? Because of Boston Baked Beans, of course! Why did Bostonians love baked beans? Well, Boston had tons of beans, because they´re cheap and easy to store and cook. They had tons of molasses because of trade. Put the two together, and voila!

Boston Blackie is a famous blues singer, who sang songs like ´ABC Blues´ and ´Louise´.
Dirty Water
Probably THE most famous song about Boston, this has the chorus, "Oh, I love that dirty water, oh, Boston you´re my home". The dirty water in question is the Charles River, not always known for its cleanliness. The song is by the Standells.
Cradle of Liberty
Boston is called the Cradle of Liberty because of its starting the American Revolution through a series of actions - notably the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party.
Robert Frost (1874-1963)
Robert Frost (1874-1963) won four Pulitzer Prizes and is famous for this rhyming poetry about the woods and landscapes of New England.

The Spenser for Hire series is written by Robert B Parker, and is about a private detective who has an office in Boston and does most of his sleuthing in the Boston area. It was later made into a TV show and a few made-for-TV movies.

This famous novel by Henry James talks about a group of people living in Boston just after the Civil War, and the various ways in which they deal with each other.

Robert Lowell (1917-1977)
Robert Lowell was a poet famous for ´For the Union Dead´ as well as many other poems. He was famous for being a post-war (WW2) leader in poetry.
Elizabeth Bishop (1911 - 1979)
Elizabeth Bishop won the Pulitzer Prize in 1955 for her combination of North & South and A Cold Spring. She wrote about her childhood (she was orphaned at 5) as well as the world around her.

Emily Dickenson (1830-1886)
Emily Dickenson was born, lived, and died in Amherst, Massachusetts, living in her family´s home the entire time, and rarely traveling. She became a recluse in her later years, but she poured all of her energy into her poetry.
Thanksgiving Began in 1621
The Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts in 1620, and had a very rough winter in which many of them died. In 1621, the governor, William Bradford, decided to celebrate when the harvest came in well in the fall. He called for a day of "thanksgiving".

Amy Lawrence Lowell (1874-1925) was born in Brookline, Massachusetts and wrote free-verse poetry that was well received. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1926.

(Frederick) Childe Hassam (1859-1935) was born in born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He is famous for his paintings of New England, of families, and the sparkling effects he achieved in them.

Aerosmith
One of the most famous bands of the 1970s and 1980s, Aerosmith began its career in the streets of Boston, later moving on to world-wide fame.
Boston Terrier
The Boston Terrier is a dog, a cross between an English bulldog and the white English terrier. It was first created in Boston in 1884, and was officially recognized by the AKC in 1893.

Boston developed its love for baked beans because it had a huge trade in molasses. It combined this molasses with the plentiful and cheap beans produced locally.

1972: Women Allowed to Run
Women were not allowed to run in the Boston Marathon until 1972. Several women did "sneak in" before this, either by signing up with just a first initial, or jumping into the race when the gun went off.
Nina Kuscsik was the first woman to win the women´s race, in 1972, out of 8 entered women.
